BIOGRAPHY: Dean S Sears, "Mr Tobey and the Moderator" by Nancy Thacher Reid;
1931;Dennis Historical Society Newsletter, Vol 15, #7, Aug 1992; p 1; Copy in
the Society Archives; There are several good moderator stories I would like to share with you. ...The most famous of our moderators in recent years was the venerable Dean S Sears. Stern in demeanor, he was noted for his keen, dry, Cape Cod sense of humor. At one town meeting, an article was passed which raised his annual pay by $25. After its passage, Mr Sears thanked the meeting for the raise, and was quoted as having said, "I shall spend it all on riotous living." Visiting with Mr Dean one day, in the autumn of his life, I asked if this was, in fact, what he said, and he replied, "Yes, that is what I said, and that is what I did!"Henry Homer Sears of East Dennis says Dean's father was Benjamin (poss [10533] or [12897]?) and that his son Richard D lives in Atlanta.
DENNIS-Dean S Sears, 84, former Dennis town clerk, town moderator and
Barnstable County Registrar of Deeds, died Tuesday in Alabaster, AL, where he
had been living for the past year.
Mr Sears was born in E Dennis and attended Dennis schools. Later, he attended Huntington and Northeastern Law School in Boston. For a number of years, he worked for the Hyannis Trust Co, the National Shawmut and National Rockland Bank of Boston.
In the 1940s, he served as town clerk and tax collector. He served for 27
years as the town moderator and for more than 40 years on town boards and
committees.
He was the first president of the Dennis HIstorical Society.
In 1944, he succeeded his father, the late Benjamin F Sears, to the office of Registrar of Deeds for Barnstable County. He retired from that office in the 1970s.
He also served on the board of directors for the Cape Five Cent Savings Bank.
Mr Sears' ancestors were among the first settlers in Dennis. He was part of
the 11th generation of his family to live in the town.
Henry Kelley II, a member of the Dennis Finance Committee and a former
selectman, described Mr Sears as a man dedicated to town service.
"Dean Sears was in a class by himself as the grand old man of Dennis," said
Kelley.
"He was prominent in his generation as a man who willingly and happily served his town."
The town of Dennis declared 5 May 1981, as Dean S Sears' Day, and conferred
upon him the title of "dean of all the citizens of Dennis."
At that time, Mr Sears told town residents, "I am deeply moved by you lauding
me for the things I have endeavored to do in the past to make this a
progressive town. I am a progressive conservative in all my doings."
He said,"The town of Dennis has always held a deep affection in my heart. It was in my family to be this way... and I have tried to carry this spirit on in my life."
Mr Sears was a former master of Mount Horeb Lodge AF & AM.
He is survived by a son, RIchard D Sears of Birmingham, AL; five
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Was Drowned on Memorial Day
Frank Sears all alone at the time.
A Brockton young man had been employed in local markets til recently. Frank
Sears, a well known young man who formerly resided in this city and was
employed in some local markets, was drowned at Brewster on Saturday afternoon.
He was alone at the time and just how the accident occurred is not known. He
owned a sail boat, which he kept on a fresh water pond about three quarters of a mile from his home in Brewster. And on Saturday he planned, with four of his friends, to take a sail and spend the afternoon on an outing.
He started before his friends, in order to get the boat ready, and when his
friends arrived at the pond, they found the boat had drifted ashore but they
could see nothing of Mr Sears. They became alarmed, fearing something had
happened and, calling assistance, started in to drag the pond. The work was
kept up all afternoon but it was not until evening that te body was found and
brought to shore. It was found about 50 feet from shore, in about four feet of water. It was thought that in getting the boat in trim for sail, he must have slipped and fallen into the water.
There was a slight cut on the inside of the upper and lower lips, and it is
supposed that he slipped and struck some object. The fall probably stunned him and he must have strangled to death.
Word was sent to his relatives in this city at once, and yesterday morning
his brother, Mr Charles E Sears, and his uncle, Mr Ellery C Cahoon, went to
Brewster and brought the body back with them last evening. It was taken to the undertaking warerooms of F S Howard, where it was prepared for burial. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at the residence of his parents, Mr & Mrs Alton W Sears, at the rear of 1489 Main St. Campello, at 2 o'clock.
The deceased was well known and popular in this city. He was employed for a long time at Winters Market and later at Garfield Bros. He left this city a
year ago last April to go to Brewster, where he had lived ever since, and where he was employed by his uncle, Mr W W Wixon. He was 29 years of age ad a widower, his wife having died about three years ago. One son about six years of age survives him. He also leaves a father, Mr Alton W Sears, and Mr Charles E Sears, a brother. Both of them are employed as motormen on the Old Colony Street Railway. The former has run on the Belmont St line for years, but a short time ago suffered a shock and and has been unable to work since. The brother runs on the Whitman line.Death Cert- DOD 31 May 1903, cause: drowning, Town Clerk's Office, Brewster, MA
Yarmouth Register, 5 Jun 1903, F.W. Sears, Drowned - Fell from Sail Boat at Brewster Saturday Afternoon
Alone, and with none near to render aid that might have saved his life, Frank Wilson Sears, 29, a market clerk, formerly of Brockton, was drowned in a pond in Brewster, a short distance from his home, Saturday afternoon. The body was recovered in four feet of water, about 50 yards from the shore.
It is supposed the young man caught his toe in a cleat or some projection on the deck of a sailboat he was preparing for a party of friends, and, falling, hit his head and was unconscious when he fell into the water. In no other way is his drowning in shallow water accounted for.
The body was taken to Brockton Sunday night by his brother, Charles E Sears, and his uncle, Ellery C Cahoon. He was the son of Alvin W Sears of 1489 Main street, Campello. Besides these relatives a son, aged about 6, Earle Sears, survives him. His wife, Jennie Reynolds Sears, died about three years and a half ago. The funeral was at 2 Tuesday afternoon from the rear of 1489 Main street, campello.
The deceased had up to a year ago last April been employed in Brockton. He came then to Brewster to take up his residence with an uncle, and became immensely popular with the young people of the town. Saturday afternoon he planned to take a party of four friends on a sailing trip, and invited them to meet him there at 1.30. The party arrived and found the boat, with mainsail set, ashore.
Sears was not aboard, and an alarm was at once given. Many of the townspeople were soon at the scene, and the work of dragging the pond began. About 50 yards from shore, in a depth of four feet, at 8.30, the body was found, resting at full length on the bottom, which is flat, and extends almost on a level plane from close inshore.
Investigation was very thorough as to what could have caused the drowning. Appearances indicated that the young man had taken the boat on a short trip toward the center to set the sails, and after hoisting the mainsail had started to set up the jib. In making a hasty step forward to release it, it is presumed his toe struck a projection, and, in falling that his head struck the rail. A fall into the water was followed by strangulation as he began to regain consciousness, it is supposed.
The young man was very well known in Brockton, where the grief at his death is second only by that of the mourning at Brewster. When in Brockton he had worked at Garfield's, Bickford's and Sanford Winter's markets. He was also employed at Cahoon, Kingman & Swift's wholesale place for some time. He was very generally known, and well liked by hosts of friends. He is spoken of by former employers as a bright, active young man, who was the life of such parties as he happened to be with, and a cordial, wholesouled fellow, who made friends wherever he went. He was steady and industrious.
Especially sad is the drowning of the young man considered by his many more intimate friends and relatives. His father, Alvin W Sears, one of the old-time drivers of the horse cars and more recently a motor man on the Belmont & Pleasant street car line, some weeks ago was incapacitated and is able now to make his way only with crutches.
Frank married Mabel E Purdy, daughter of Henry M Purdy and Ella I Hayden, on 23 Feb 1897 in Brockton, MA. Mabel was born 15 May 1876 in Seymore, CT. She died 16 Feb 1900 in Brockton, MA and was buried in Brockton, MA.
