S P May, p 53-5, No 7, Capt. Samuel Sears was one of the earliest inhabitants of Harwich. His first house was just over the line that separates that part of Har., now West Brewster, and East Dennis, formerly a part of Yarmouth, and stood until after 1800, and was occupied by his sons. The house of the late Capt. Constant Sears was built upon its site. He built again where Samuel Ripley Sears lived, and this house was demolished a few years since.
The will of Samuel Sears of Harwich, dated Apr. 7, 1740, was filed Mar. 6,1741-2, by Judah and Seth Sears, Exrs., and names surviving sons, Joseph, Joshua, Judah,John, Seth, and Benjamin; Jonathan,Joseph and Prince, sons of Jonathan, deceased; Samuel and Seth, sons of Samuel, deceased; and daus. Hannah Vincent and Tamsin Freeman; also grand-daus. Abigail Hall, Mercy Hawes, Ruth Sears, Desire Freeman, Mary Snow, Hannah Foster and Sarah Sears.

1722, "Provision made to refund Capt. Samuel Sears money which he paid to the soldiers the last time they went out on King's service."
His wife was admd to the Ch. in Har., June 15, 1701.

and Mercy Sears,"and she was doubtless the dau. of Dea. Mayo. Mary, dau. John
and Thomazin Sunderland b July 15, 1665[Boston Rec Com IX,41]

!Knowles Gen-John was left an orphan before his recollection and apparently was brought up by his uncle, Joshua bangs, for whom his first son, Joshua, seems to have been named. He must have been given a good schooling and evidently from youth up was exceptionally efficient and well regarded. The earliest occurence of his name after he grew up is in the registration of an earmark for his cattle, 24 Apr 1695. The records of the county not destroyed in 1827 contain frequent references to him in trusted capacities. A juryman in 1701, he was chosen as early as 1706 a member of a board of arbitration. In 1715, as Lieut. John Knowles, he was elected one of five townsmen to apportion the remaining common lands. He was for many years coroner and was commander of the Second Barnstable Regiment.

Joshua Sparrow in his will gave to John Knowles the house and land where he was living. The Knowles were a Head-of-Town-Cove family, that is to say, an
Orleans rather than an Eastham family, none of them moving down to the north
side of Town Cove until the third generation. Probably Deacon Edward (3)
Knowles may have been the first to do this and some of the sons of Col John may have thus removed before their father. Col Willard (4) Knowles devised to his son Joseph "the land where the old house stood which he improved," and Joseph very soon sold to Timothy Doane 16 acres located at Stage Land, formerly belonging to Col John Knowles. This was the name for the point south of Nauset harbor. It has not been learned whether this was the first location given by the will of Joshua Sparrow. Late in life Colonel Knowles purchased from the Treat heirs the farm of Rev Samuel Treat and from that time on the senior branch of the Knowles family belonged in what is still the town of Eastham. The junior branch, descendants of the younger son of the first Richard, remained in what is now Orleans.

In the "Sears Gen'y," by Rev. E.H. Sears, Richard Sears is made the junior by two years of his brother Daniel, and born 1684. On the contrary it appears by their gravestones in (West) Chatham old burying-ground, that Daniel was the younger; being born in 1682, and Richard in 1680.
On a half sunken gravestone in a south-easterly direction from the Sears
monument, may still be read the following inscription:
"Here lyes ye Body of Richard Sears, who died May ye 24th 1718 in ye 38th

14. Daniel Sears Capt (Paul , Richard ) was born about 1682 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Plymouth Colony. He died 10 Aug 1756 in Chatham, Barnstable, MA.

S P May, p 60, No 14, Capt. Daniel Sears purchased land in Monomoy, now Chatham, in 1707; was town Clerk, 1714-21, 1725; Selectman, 1719-1730; Ensign, 1722, and later Captain, 1722, "School to be kept at quarter of Ensign Daniel Sears, he to select the school master."
His will, dated "20 Jan. 1753, new stile," was proved July 27, 1756, by Daniel Sears, Execr, and mentions Daniel, Rebecca, Sarah, Mercy and Deborah. Paul Sears, James Covel and Wm. Nickerson appraised the estate Sep. 14, 1756. R.Est. L 300, and personal L 70 10 8.
In the "Sears Gen'y" it is stated that Daniel Sears married Sarah, dau. of
J. Hawes of Yarmouth, and in a manuscript of Hon. David Sears, referred to in
the chapter on English Ancestry, see ante, she is called "dau. of Jere. Hawes."
The error has been perpetuated on the Sears monuments in Yarmouth, Chatham
and Colchester.
She was the daughter of Samuel Howes of Yarmouth, gr.-dau. of Joseph Howes,
and gt.-gr.-dau. of Thomas Howes.
The will of Samuel Howes, dated 1722, recorded in Barns. Prob. Rec., IV, 90, names daughters Sarah Sears, and gives her 20s with what she already had; Hope Sears and Mercy Sears (who had married respectively, Daniel and Richard Sears, brothers, and Josiah Sears, their cousin).
On the Yarmouth records the name is clearly written Sarah Howes. The first
Sarah Hawes in Yarmouth, was the dau.of Dea. Joseph H., and born Apr., 1696,
therefore but thirteen years of age in 1709, when Daniel Sears married. The
first Jeremiah Hawes was born in 1711.
The old family mansion was taken down in 1863, having after the death of
Madame Richard Sears been occupied by divers families, and allowed to become
dilapidated. It was originally, perhaps,a one story, or one and a half story
building with gambril roof, and added to until it occupied much ground.
In a letter from J. Hawes to Daniel Sears of Chatham, printed in the "Sears
Gen'y," reference is made to its "partial destruction by fire in 1763," at which time the ever to be lamented loss if the family papers, is said to have taken place. The old building, when taken down, bore no marks of having ever passed through the fiery ordeal; the original timbers were in place, with the bark still on, nor does "the oldest inhabitant" remember any tradition of such an event. Benjamin Bangs of Harwich, to whose diary I have before referred, makes no allusion to any fire in Chatham at that time, though chronicling more trivial events happening there.
An amusing anecdote is related in connection with the old house, and marriage of Deborah Sears in 1741.
The ceremony was performed at home, and the guests remained for the evening, as there was to be a dance in honor of the occasion.
The long chamber had been cleared, and made ready, and in due time they were "tripping it on the light fantastic toe."
The bride, a buxom lass, and not sylph-like in form, enjoyed dancing immensely
In the course of the evening her animation became excessive, and while dancing vigorously her foot broke through the floor, causing some confusion, and slight injury.
This tradition being remembered by some of the neighbors when the old house
was torn down, an examination was made to see if there was any evidence of the disaster, and in confirmation of the story, they found a square of board had been let into the center of the flooring.
The gravestones of Daniel Sears and his wife may still be seen in the Chatham burying-ground, laid face down; one of them bears this inscription,
"Here lyes ye body of Capt. Daniel Sears, who departed this life, August ye 10 1756, in ye 74th year of his age."

WCS He gave all his real estate to his son Daniel. "All those my lands and

+ 92 M ii Daniel Sears Capt
+ 93 F iii Sarah Sears

BIRTH-DEATH: Abstracts of Harwich, MA Vital Records, Vol 1, by Vernon Nickerson; 1969; unmarried
96 M vi David Sears was born 20 Apr 1720 in . He died 1746.

S.P. May p.61, No 65, Daniel Sears was appd admr upon the estates of these two brothers, 13 May 1747. They were styled "mariners" and probably died, or were lost while on a voyage, as 12 months were allowed to elapse before taking out letters of administration. David was probably the one mentioned by Benj. Bangs of Harwich, in his diary in 1744, as having "got home from the Spaniards." Carthagena Expedition. They perhaps went on the Louisburg Expedition in 1745, in Col Gorham's Regt, or as sailors, and never returned.
In the Sears Gen'y it is stated that these two brothers went to England,
possibly to recover the family estates, were officers in the Pretender's army, and both fell at the battle of Culloden, 16 Apr 1746." There was no Col Sears of Chatham and Peter Sears was not born til 1753, 7 yrs after the battle of Culloden. In the "Gen Register," IX, 134, we read, "Capt Peter Sears," of Revolutionary army, "son of Col Sears of Chatham, killed at Culloden." There is no truth to either statement. Benj. Bangs, a merchant of Harwich, was in Boston, 7 Jun 1746, and on that date enters in his diary that he had lately heard of the death of Richard and David Sears of Chatham." The news of the battle of Culloden was not received in Boston until nearly a month later, viz.: 2 Jul, and was first published in the "Boston News Letter," for Thursday, 3 Jul 1746. "A letter from Belfast, 25 April, gives undoubted intelligence of the entire defeat of the rebels on Culloden muire, on the 16th." Unless Mr Bangs had a spiritual communication, he could not have heard of the brothers' death at Culloden, at the date of the entry in his diary, and I need say nothing of the improbability of two common seaman brought up in a Puritan family joining the Catholic Army, and being commissioned as officers. The Capt Peter Sears referred to above was of Scituate, and son of Jonathan Sears of Halifax, MA, of the line of Silas, and only distantly connected with the Chatham branch. Gen Duvall, from whose "Minutes" the Register article is quoted, was a pension agent in Tallahassee, FL, and would not be likely to know any thing of the family history. I have a copy of the letter which he addressed to Mr Orin Sears of Hingham (probably the identical copy referred to in the Register article), and in which he gave lists of Sears in Rev Army, quoted in Reg., and it contains not a word about "Col Sears of Chatham killed at Culloden."

15. Silas Sears (Silas , Richard ) was born 1661 in Yarmouth, Plymouth Colony.

S P May, p. 64, No 15, Silas Sears, Yeoman, resided in the East precinct of
Yarmouth, now Dennis, and was a prominent man there.
His will dated July 28, 1727, " in ill health," was proved Nov. 29,1732, by
Judah Paddock and Eleazar Sears, Execrs, and was witnessed by Peter Thacher,
Joseph Hall and Edward Sturges.
It mentions "wife Elizabeth; sons Silas, Thomas, Eleazar, and James; and
daus. Sarah Hamlin, Phebe Buck, and Deborah Gray." The old homestead fell to
Eleazar.
He left R. Estate valued at L 1200, and personal do. L 299 3 7.

Silas married (1) Sarah Crosby, daughter of Thomas Crosby Rev. and Sarah, on 1692. Sarah was born 24 Mar 1667 in . She died 20 Mar 1705/1706.

They had the following children:

+ 98 F i Phebe Sears

Eleazar married (1) Mary Nickerson, daughter of John Nickerson and Elizabeth Baker, on Feb 1729 in Yarmouth, MA. Mary was born about 1700 in . She died 10 Nov 1765 and was buried in gr-st.
Eleazar also married (2) Lydia Gray on 4 Dec 1766 in Yarmouth, MA. Lydia was born about 1728 in . She died 9 Feb 1795 and was buried in gr-st.

Silas also married (2) Elizabeth O Killey, daughter of David Killey and Jane O, on 1 May 1707 in Yarmouth, MA. Elizabeth was born 1686 in .

16. Richard Sears (Silas , Richard ) was born about 1672 in Yarmouth, Plymouth Colony. He died 12 May 1726 and was buried in gr-st.

S P May, No 16, [handnotes]d. ae 54 Richard Sears bought land in Plymouth, of Saml Lucas in 1697, which he sold in 1699 to Eleazer Rogers, buying of him part of the Elder Brewster lot, which he sold in 1708 to Jona. Barnes.
Dec 19,1698, Juror; Mar 18, 1700-1 Constable; Mar 3, 1701-2, Tithing man;
Mar 1, 1702-3 Juror & Inspector of Alewife fisheries; Dec 15, 1703, Dec 12,1705 Mar 3, 1706-7, Juror; Apr 1, 1709, "Gardinor (Guardian) to Thomas Garner.
[Ebenz. Adams & Elizabeth Sears md. Canterbury, CN, Oct 11, 1744. ? was she of the old Lyme family.]
In what year he settled in Old Lyme is not known, but Dec. 6, 1719, Joseph
Southwick of that place sold land to "Richard Sears of Hingham, Suffolk co.,Province of Massts." He had probably lived in Hingham between 1709 and 1719, but his name is not found in the church or town records there.
I find no further reference to him in town or church records, of Lyme. As
his sons Silas and James bought land there in 1727-8, and they were probably
married at that date, but their names do not appear again in the records.
I have been unable, after repeated applications, to obtain a search of Probate Records in New London, altho' offering to pay unusual fees therefor. I am told the files are in utter confusion and unindexed.
The old cemeteries in Lyme may perhaps furnish some data.
I have assumed that the Anna Sears of Old Lyme, who married Richard Smith, was the daughter of Richard Sears, as I find no other family of Sears on the records and his mother's name was Anna, which adds to the probability, but it needs confirmation.

Richard married Bashua Harlow, daughter of William Harlow and Mary Shelley, on 21 Oct 1696 in Plymouth, MA. Bashua was born 21 Apr 1667 in .

They had the following children:

106 M i Silas Sears was born 23 Aug 1697 in Plymouth, MA.
