ESL Saloonkeeper 1870 census Steilacoom, WA
1889 Census lists him as farmer with children shown (Washington Terr.)
!ESL Asa supposedly came to Steialcoom, WA when he was 13 years old. He took
a job on a boat sailing from Boston to Wash Terr. He wanted to get away from
his family since they were overly religious and they even had their own churech
in Boston which only Sears family members could attend. in Cleveland Amory's
book "The Proper Bostonians" he mentions this fact.
There seems to be a connection between Theophilus Sears and Asa. I was told
Asa lived in a boarding house in Steilacoom along with Carl Gorich who later
became his father-in-law. Carl was married to Mary Slame who was a full
blooded Indian of the Steilacoom tribe. Their daughter was Catherine. Asa and
Kate married when she was 18 and they farmed 120 acres of land between American
lake and Sequalichew lake. Asa died in 1892(?) from a ruptured appendix.
Asa's youngest daughter Edna Gaul still lives in Steilacoom (1984) and told
the following-"In 1918 when the government took over these peoples land, they
felt they were not getting enough money. So all of the neighbors got together
and fought it in court. They lost the case so her mother dug up the smallest
fruit trees from the orchard and took them with her to the new place. This all
became Camp Lewis.
Asa married (1) Catherine "Katie" Gorich, daughter of Carl L Gorich and Mary Elizabeth Slaim, on 25 Feb 1879. Catherine was born 7 Jun 1861 in Chambers Creek, WA. She died 16 Nov 1922 in Tacoma.

Yarmouth Register, 20 Aug 1892 - interesting story in the same column reporting visits of his two sons - not necessarily related to Freeman - The new cat boat that was designed and built by George Shiverick, was launched last Saturday. Her dimensions are as follows: 20 feet 6 in over all, 17 feet 9 in waterline, and 9 ft beam, mast 29 1/2 feet, main boom 28 feet, gaft 18 feet; 99 yards for sail, center board 6 feet long, 4 1/2 deep, draught 2 feet. The boat was given a trial Wednesday and it is said she carried her sail well and reached fast, and her owner, Mr Shiverick, thinks that she will make some of the best of them hustle. She is a powerful boat as her dimensions show, and a fine looking one, too.

Following a long illness of nearly eight years, Barnabas Sears passed away at 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 5. For the past six months he has been confined to his bed where he suffered as a martyr, patiently and cheerfully.
Barnabas Sears was born on March 31[sic], 1837, son of Freeman Sears of East Dennis. In 1866, when he was twenty-nine years old, he married Susan Rogers of Dennisport and made his home from then on in this town. By Susan Rogers he had three daughters: Mrs Everett Baker of West Harwich, Mrs Susie Rogers of Dennisport, and Mrs Smith R Kelley of Dennisport. His first wife died young, and in 1896 he married Mrs Ellen Howes, who survives him.
Mr Sears was a true to form Cape Cod son, --a life brimming full of industry. In early life he followed the sea, but shortly after his marriage he retired from the sea and ran a seine factory, and even to this day we hear yarns and stories of Barnie Sears's seine factory.
Mr Sears was also interested in cranberry culture and at one time was one of the leading bog owners in this section of the Cape.
He was postmaster in Dennisport for a short while. He had interests in a bakery which was run by Darius Rogers, his son-in-law. Up to the time of his ill health he managed successfully the coal yard at North Harwich station.
Mr and Mrs Eugene Ellis of East Wareham and Mr and Mrs Benjamin Sears of Falmouth were in town to attend the funeral, which was held Sunday afternoon at his late home. Miss Mary Cobb of West Harwich and Mr Eugene Ellis sang. His friend, Rev B F Lindsay, conducted the services.
Mr Sears's body was laid at rest in Swan Lake Cemetery. He rests in the soil he loved so well.
Barnabas married Susan Small Rogers on 19 Jan 1860 in Harwich, MA. Susan was born 1839 in Harwich, MA. She died 12 Oct 1892 in Dennis, Barnstable co, MA.
