Benjamin R Sears, Jr Autobiography-The first six years in Steelton are very
vague and the death of my father when I was but six years of age brought a
sharp change in our family life.
I must have begun formal school life in Harrisburg. I recall that the
discipline was extreme for the misbehavior was punished by having the culprit
come to an empty bench in the front of the room and take a thrashing from the
teacher across the legs with a rattan switch.
I recall attending an evening performancer of a Wild West Show which came to
Harrisburg with Buffalo Bill (Cody) as the proprietor and one of the actors. I
have some recollection of taking the Hudson River steamboat from New York,
sleeping over night in a stateroom and waking up with the sunshine streaming in
at Albany or Troy. It was a matter of some embarrassment to my mother that, as
a rather harum scarum youngster, at times I would forget to wear a necktie to
school and then be reported for the absence. Also I recall when I was along in
the 6th grade that the Spanish American War broke out and a chap named Forest
Jepson, a somewhat aggresive boy, came bursting into the cloak room one morning
to announce the sinking of the battleship Maine, and shouting out the logan,
"Remember the Maine, to hell with Spain!" Miss Maud Carpenter, in grade 8, who
was something of a martinet, a stickler for grammar used to say "Zachias, he,
did climb a tree, Our Master for to see." [sic]
I left school in Nov 1905 to go to work as a clerk at The First National
Bank of Bennington. My salary was $300 per year. Instead of paying me by the
month, the Graves brothers, who ran the bank then , paid me once each quarter
so I had to wait for my $75 for three full months. As clerk I had to serve as
janitor - sweep the floors, wash the big front windows, and run the furnace for
the whole building during the winter months. Also at this time I was active in
the Second Congregational Church when Mr Frank Pope was the Sunday School
Superintendant and Rev George S Mills was the pastor. He and Mrs Mills lived
in the big parsonage at the corner of Pleasant and School Streets. I sang in
the choir under the director of Mrs George Keesman.
In 1911 he enrolled at Springfield College where he grad with he degree of
Bachelor of Humanics (B.H.). He was in the USNR in 1918-19 and left service as
an Ensign. He married late in
life to Eleanor Stockin whose father was the last owner
and publisher of "The Youth's Companion". In 1926, Harry and Eleanor settled in

MA where he worked as a science teacher at the F.A. Day Junior H.S. In the
summers they both worked at camps on Lake Winnepesaukee. They retired in 1954
