DRS He was born in the Wellington home in E Lexington, moved when he was five
months old with the family to KS after the Civil War when his father
homesteaded there. He and his brother took turns attending school and heloing
on the farm. He had a BS Kansas Ag College 1892, MS 1896, D Sc KS St College
1937; Asst Horticulturist KS Experimental Station, Manhattan, 1892-6; director
Nova Scotia School of Horticulture, WOlfville, NS 1897-1904; professor NS Ag
College, Truro, NS 1904-7; Prof of Pomology, MA State College 1907-36.
Starting in 1928 he joined Sir WIlfred Grenfell in Labrador each summer, aiding
in gardening practices for the Grenfell Mission, was official photographer for
these trips. Wrote several texts on pomology, and for scientific journals the
results of his research. He and his wife were active in church and community.

Northampton, Mass., Oct 10--Fred Coleman Sears of near-by Amherst, professor
emeritus of pomology at the University of Massachusetts, died here last night
in Cooley-Dickinson Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 83.
Born in Lexington, Mass., Mr Sear moved with his parents to Kansas in boyhood,
and was graduated from Kansas State Agricultural College in 1892. Later he was
associated with the Kansas Experimental Station, Utah Agricultural College, the
Nova Scotia School of Horticulture and the Nova Scotia Agricultural College.
Mr Sears joined the faculty of the University of Massachusetts, the
Massachusetts agricultural college, in 1908. He retired as head of the
department of pomology in 1936.
Ten years ago he was chosen by Dr Wilfred Grenfell to join the latter's
Labrador misson as agricultural adviser, and he made the trip annually for
several years afterward as official photographer. He was the author of several
college textbooks on fruit growing.
Surviving are twin daughters, Mrs Lincoln S Ferris of Oregon and Mrs Robert A
Johnson of S Hanson, Mass.; a brother Thomas B Sears; a sister, Miss Kate
Sears, and four grandchildren.

Fred married Ruth Tipton Stokes, daughter of Russell Thomas Stokes and Annie Hart, on 19 Oct 1897 in Lexington, MA. Ruth was born 28 Aug 1868 in Litchfield, Montgomery, IL. She died 24 Feb 1924 in Topeka, Shawnee Co, KS.

of a brain tumor on 28 May 1993 and Mom died in her sleep 28 Mar 1995.
They loved Kauai and after retiring, chose to stay on their warm and
beautiful island. They, also, cherished their friendships and loved to hear
