death of his mother in February 1905, bought out his brother's and sister's
shares in the farm. Prior to their marriage, Edna had been living next door
with her aunt, Mrs Mial (D-7 Phoebe Doane) Peck. Virgil, energetic, ambitious
and enterprising, soon increased his farm to 172 acres, built new barns and was
among the first to adopt modern ways of farming and living. He moved most of
the original house to the east property line as a tenant house and buit a
second teneat house west of the main house. For his bride he built a large
"late Victorian" style house, the first to have indoor plumbing and self
generated electricity, in the area, and bought one of the first Model T Fords.
With its large lawns, circular driveway, many large maple and walnut trees,
three houses, several large barns, creekside location and spreading orchards it
was truly a "show place." Edna's premature death, at age 36, in 1918 left
Virgil with 6 children from 1 1/2 to 11 years of age. His success in
fulfilling the dual role of father and mother was a little less than
miraculous. We children were very fortunate in our parentage. I can remember
my mother, Edna, as the sweetest mother possible and her insistence on personal
cleanliness.
Virgil's second marriage, in 1923,to Letitia Byers, 1881-1968, lasted for 44
years, until his death in 1967. "Letty," at age 42, took over a most difficult
task as step-mother of 6 children, ages 6-16. She was especially helpful to
the younger children. Letty was a daughter of Matthew Thomas Byers, 1853-1920,
and Margaret Brown, 1853-1923. She was born in Rochester, NY. It was from
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, that Letty went to Chicago in 1923 to marry Virgil.
While Letty was living in Rochester as a young woman, Virgil had courted her
for some time prior to his marriage to Edna Brown.
Virgil married (1) Edna Brown on 5 Apr 1905. Edna was born 10 Aug 1882. She died 19 May 1918.

River Valley; Vol II 1913; p. 509; He was born at Glenwild in the town of
Thompson, and grew up in Monticello, receiving his education in the old
Monticello Academy. He then entered the employ of Dr E F Quinlan, of
Monticello, in his drug store; in 1871 he removed to Honesdale, PA, entered the
employ of William H Reed; in 1877 he returned to Monticello and entered the
drug store of A A Crain; in 1881 he went to MN and was employed in the drug
business in St Paul and later at Rice Lake, WI. After pursuing a course in
chemistry he passed an examination in pharmacy at Eau Claire, WI, after which
he spent some time in the drug business in Minneapolis and other points in MN.
Returning to his native county he conducted a drug store for some time in
Liberty, NY, and in 1887 returned to Honesdale, PA, remaining for six years,
then returned to Liberty, where he continued in that business until his
election as county treasurer in Nov 1910. Before assuming the duties of this
office he sold out the drug business, but is still interested in property at
Liberty, where he owns several parcels of real estate. While residing in
Liberty he filled numerous local offices, and was for everal years treasurer of
the local Masonic Lodge. He has long been active in fraternal circles, being
past master of his lodge. He has served as treasurer of the village of
Liberty, also served as trustee. He has always been a strong Democrat. He was
one of the incorporators of the Episcopal church at Liberty, for seventeen
years was warden and treasurer and vestryman of St John's Episcopal Church of
Monticello.
