because I think he is one of God's noblemen; an honest man, and one that I
believe has lived a good and useful life, doing unto others as he would that
others should do unto him.
"But at such times, words are of little avail. ---May God send his comforting

Lowell C Sears, one fo the oldest and most respected residents of Rome, this
county, died in his home in that place early on Monday morning, 31 May 1909,
aged 76 years and 18 days. Mr Sears was for many yearsa Justice of the Peace
in Rome.
He was born in Camden, Oneida co, NY, 13 may 1833, and ten years later came
to WI with his parents, who were descendants of Richard Sears, one of the
Puritans who founded Salem, MA. Since coming to WI, he has always been a
resident of the town of Sullivan. He was married 5 Feb 1857, to Catherine
Bornheimer, and to them were born six daughters, five of whom survive him. In
his home he was ever cheerful, kind and indulgent. He was never known to lose
his temper or speak an unkind word.
For years he has devoted himself entirely to the care of his wife whose
failing health was a great source of anxiety to him. Since her death last
June, he has never awakened to his former interest in public affairs, but
seemed to feel that his life's work was done, and waited patiently for the time
to come when he shoudl be called to join her. Since April 16, he has been
unable to leave the house, suffering with dropsy caused by heart trouble.
He served his country during the last two years of the Civil War, having
discharged as Corporal from Co A, 1st WI Heavy Artillery.
We quote from the Sears' Genealogythe inscription on the Sears Monument in
Yarmouth, MA:
"Worth is better than wealth,
Goodness greater than nobility,
Excellence brighter than distinction."
"This," said one of his daughters, "seems to state clearly father's
principles."
He was a member of the IOOF and an attendant often at their lodge. He also
belonged to the MWA.
The GAR of which he was a member, will have charge of the funeral Thusday, 3
June, at 2:00 PM at Rome, WI. He will be laid to rest beside his wife and
father in Crowder Cemetery, north of the village of Rome.1 Apr 1915 Ft Dodge, IA
Lowell C Sears visited his old homein Camden, NY over fifty years after they
left there. The only familiar object he found on the place was an old apple
tree, near where the house used to be.
At the GAR monument in Wash, DC, 1892, he had the pleasure of meeting William
F Dann, Of New haven, CT, whom he had not seen since they were playmates in
Camden, NY in 1843.
Lowell married Catherine Bornheimer, daughter of Matthais Bornheimer and Agnes Hammer, on 5 Feb 1857 in Rome, WI, WI. Catherine was born 4 Aug 1883 in Darmstadt, Canton Werstadt, Hesse, Germany. She died 17 Jun 1908 in Rome, Jefferson co, WI and was buried 21 Jun 1908 in Rome, WI.

Name was also known as Freudmadder. She was disowned by her Catholic parents
for marrying outside the faith. Her family settled in New York state. When
they moved to WI she walked so the load would be lighter for the oxen. She was
14. After Lowell went off to war, she earned $600 by doing odd jobs, and gave
it to Frank Aldrich for their old age and burial if need be. She gathered some
little red, white, and blue stones to make a walk with the Presidential seal,
it's still there in Rome.

Catherine Bornheimer Sears, wife of Lowell C Sears died at her home in the
village of Rome, 17 Jun 1908. She was born in Hesse, Darmstadt, Germany 2 Aug
1833 and came to this country in early childhood. She lived in PA for about
ten years and has been in WI sixty years. She was married to Lowell Clark
Sears, 5 Feb 1857, and to them were born six daughters; Rhoda A Foljan; Lottie
M, wife of P W Cartwright; Emma K; Nellie M wife of R M Roberts; Clara Holcomb;
Bertha E wife of C W Aldrich, all of whom are living except Emma Katie who died
18 Apr 1870. One daughter, Mrs P W Cartwright, of Pasadena, CA, was unable to
be with her during her brief illness of three weeks. Besides her husband and
daughters she leaves four granddaughters, eight grandsons, two sisters, a
brother, and nieces and nephews to mourn her loss.
The large gathering at the funeral services at the home Sunday, 21 Jun, bore
testimony of the high esteem her long, faithful, honest and industrious life
has won in the community. For several months past Mrs Sears had been failing
in health, resulting from an attack of is(?) grippe. She was much beloved for
her kindness of heart and friendly interest in the welfare of others. She will
be greatly missed by her husband to whom she was an affectionate and devoted
mother, and by a large circle of friends, who knew and loved her for her many
sterling qualities.

At one point he was reported dead, and survived to laugh about it. On 18 Mar

quite a bit of information I didn't have. It also had samples of Lottie's,
Dorothy Aldrich May's writing and someone else's I don't recognize. It's
writing in information about Helen Aldrich Adlesburger, and it resembles her
brother Arthur's handwriting, so it could be her writing.
