Subject: Bethia Sears (1765-1809)
I write to provide information I have about Bethia Sears and her first husband, Benjamin Hallett. The line of descendant information on the internet shows her marriage in November, 1787, to Benjamin Hallett and her later marriage to Gorham Baker, but there is nothing about the sons born to her marriage with Benjamin Hallett. One son, Sears Hallett, was my 2nd Gr-grandfather, and his birth in 1787 is reported in The Hallet Family of Yarmouth, #84 Library of Cape Cod History & Genealogy, Page 8; that source also reports the birth of a brother, Benjamin, born Jan 21, 1790.The information I have about the marriage and the next three generations is as follows:

Thank your for the work you have put into the web page and the
information it contains. It was the first time I found a
summary of the
problems with the ancestry of Richard Sears - I have spent some time
puzzling over a number of World Family Tree reports and the
improbability of a conncection with John Hawkens - the
dates just did
not fit.
If I can provide an additional information, I would be
glad to do
so.

SPM p.413(No 1568) Capt Sears was an enterprising and capable shipmaster; commanded steamer "Saxon," of the Boston and Philadelphia line; was for several years a Director of the First National Bank of Yarmouth, and filled other important stations in private business enterprises.
John W Sears Archive: He was a Yarmouth Selectman, built the French
Second Empire House at #138 Old King's Highway, sold to C P SmithBUR:Woodside Cemetery
Yarmouth Register, 10 Mar 1883, p 1, Capt Winthrop Sears -- departed this life at his home in Yarmouth Port, on Wednesday evening last. He was at the director's meeting at the Bank, on Monday forenoon, and about noon was taken with intense pain, and Dr Pulsifer, and later Dr Marstin of South Yarmouth, were summoned to his assistance. Temporary relief was gained, but the former trouble returned on Tuesday afternoon, and on Wednesday evening he passed quietly away. His disease was neuralgia of the heart, with nervous prostration.
Capt Sears was born in West Yarmouth, Jan 2, 1818, and at the age of 18 commenced following the sea. At 21 years of age he was master of the brig Robert Wall, a Philadelphia and Boston packet, and afterwards of the bark Tremont, the Ocean Pearl, and for several years of ship Conquest, in the foreign trade. After this he was in charge of the Benj. Franklin, the pioneer boat of Boston and Philadelphia steamship line, the Wm. Penn, of the same line, and the Concordia and St Louis, of the Boston, New Orleans and Liverpool line. During the war he was in command of a transport in the United States service. His last service at sea, was as commander of steamer Saxon, of the Boston and Philadelphia line.
Capt Sears retired from the sea about ten years ago, and also from active business pursuits. He was, however, intimately identified with the affairs of this community, and such was the reliance placed in his judgement and integrity, that his services were often sought in the public transactions and enterprise of the day. He was elected one of the board of Selectmen, Assessors and Overseers of the Poor for several successive terms, retiring in January of his own accord, and had his life been spared he would have again been called to the same position. He was a Director of the First National Bank, a Trustee of the Woodside Cemetery Association, and connected with other local organizations. Affable in his manners, correct and just in his business relations, he enjoyed a wide popularity among his associates, who will greatly miss him in the various relations of life.
Capt Sears was three times married, and leaves a widow and four children to lament the great loss which they, as well as the public, have sustained by this afflictive event.
Winthrop married (1) Clara W Myrick, daughter of Isaac Myrick Capt and Lucy Sears, on 10 Aug 1869 in Yarmouth. Clara was born 1837 in

Sabra married Sylvester Baker. Sylvester was born 1799.
LTB He was born in the last year of the 18th century, and lived in Yarmouth
where his parents lived. A deed of sale in 1832 showed he purchased three
pieces of land in Yarmouth for $131.00
During Capt Baker's life in Yarmouth he owned and mastered a small schooner
in which he traded along the Atlantic coast and the Gulf, buying cargoes of
potatoes in ME, and other goods and selling them in New Orleans, returning with
sugar and molasses which he sold at Atlantic ports.
After their marriage Sylvester and Sabra Baker lived for a short time with
ihs parents. The house has since burned. Then Sylvester bought a housein
Yarmouth (The Weir) and moved there. It was rambling sort of a house and had
an addition which had been used as a store. The house backed up on White's
Brook which lead into Follen's Pond and the children used to skate down the
brook and skate on the pond. Sabra Baker used to put her flax in White's Brook
to wet it to prepare it for spinning. At that time Sylvester was captain of a
coasting schooner, owned it, and was away on voyages. Several years previous
to 1857 he moved his family to Providence, RI, and had a crockery store there.
In 1859 he bought a farm two miles south of Ashby, MA, and moved there. After
several years at the farm he sold it and bought a house with considerable land
in the town of Ashby and lived there until his death. He and Sabra are buried
in yarmouth. He was 74 and Sabra was 81 years of age
Only four of the children lived to grow up. Sabra died at age 2. Oliver was
the only son who lived at the farm, and he only occasionally, as he had a
position in Boston where he was learning the carpet business which he
afterwards carried on in OH. He married a lovely young woman, Mary Rice, a
neighbor of the Bakers at the farm.
