circus. Beth and I remember his 50th reunion at Boston University CLA and how proudly he wore his button! He was graduated in the first class from the
College of Liberal Arts.
From Helen Lane's "History of Dighton" "In 1888 Mr Joseph E Sears was paid
$50.00 for services as Sup't. of Schools and the next year this was doubled!
He also served as Chairman of the School Committee and continued as
superintendant until 1900."p. 178 "Biography of Joseph Emery Sears written by his wife- Third of a family of five boys ad three girls. Attended school from five to ten years of age summer and winter; attended school winters only from thirteen to twenty-one years of age. At 21 years of age, without a dollar or a good suit of clothes, purposed to go through college. Went cook of a codfisherman the first six months to ger funds to start at the fitting school. With this amount, $250.00 and what could be earned by teaching some, preaching some, and canvassing for books, pictures, etc. with some help from good friends, succeeded in graduating from Prov Conf Seminary and Boston University College of Liberal Arts."

etc., at her side door to neighbors (money was always kept in a black bag
hanging by the door).
