!BIRTH-FATHER-SPOUSE-CHILDREN-DEATH-BIOGRAPHY: Samuel Pearce May, THE DESCENDANTS OF RICHARD SARES(SEARS) OF YARMOUTH,MASS; 1638-1888; Albany, Joel Munsell's Sons, 1890; p 342; NEHGS Library, Boston, MA; I combined RIN 970 with this record because of the close match with the census record. Sunderland Sears began his business life as a clerk in NY city. In 1883 he removed to St Louis and traveled through some of the Northern States engaged in different pursuits. In 1848 he located in St Louis, and entered into the milling business with Henry Whitmore, in the Old Momantum Mills, on Mill Creek, continuing the business till 1869, built the Laclede Mills, and remodeled and rebuilt the Atlantic and Empire Mills. In 1863 the St Louis elevator was built, and Mr Sears was one of the first Board of Directors. In the fall of 1869 Mr Sears was elected President of the Board, and from that time the company which had previously had a severe struggle to maintain itself, entered upon an era of success, which has placed it at the present day as one of the largest and most successful enterprises in the West. Of late years he has had charge of the Empire and Phoenix Flour Mills. Few men have been more intimately connected with the flour and grain interests of St Louis, and few have contributed as much toward making the city the important grain market it is. He eschewed politics, and directed his wonderful energies entirely to business pursuits. !LAND: IL Land Tract Sales Archive; 1815-1880; IL Secy of State; ; Univ of IL at Chicago; Date: 06 Nov 1838; Acres:80; Price: $1.25; Type: Federal; County:Fulton; Meridian: 4; Township-Range: 06N 01E; Section-Part:15-E2SE; Vol pg: 029; Arch Vol No: 696
