May p.249 Richard was educated at Phillips Acad., Exeter, NH, and at Wilbraham, MA, received a business education in the counting rooms of Wm Tucker, Boston, and Coolbaugh & Brooks, Bankers, Burlington, IA; entering business with his brother, under the firm of E. & R.W. Sears, shipping and commission merchants, Boston. The business being broken up by the war, they engaged in real estate and mining enterprises. Of an eminently social nature, he made frineds of all he met, was extremely fond of children, and had a peculiar faculty for entertaining them, liberal with his friends, and generous to a fault, his purse was ever open. He was a member of the Cadets, NE Hist Gen So, Art Club, Apollo Club, etc., Revere Lodge, St Andrews R.A. Chapter, St Bernard Encampment, and Sov Consistory of Boston.
