Notes

!Ruth G Pickard The search for Naomi Sears' parents has been long and frustrating. She is clearly referred to in two separate Bible records as the wife of Zadock Rider. Her birth is recorded as 23 Sep 1764. Her father is most certainly Seth Sears. In regard to the family of Seth and Sarah (Sears) Sears in the May Gebnealogy, there are several descrapancies. First of all, there is a tremendous gap bewteen the birth of their first child Enoch Hamlin ca. 1760 and the birth of their next listed child, Seth, to whom Samuel May assigns a ca. 1771 birthdate. A record of the family of Seth Sears, Jr., formerly in possession of Porter Barrows of Sherburne, NY, and published by the James Madison Chapter, DAR (NY DAR Church Cemetery and Town Records v. 123, p.88), says Seth Sears 3rd was born in South East Town, Dutchess County, State of New York, August 11th 176_(page torn). Ruamy Andress was born in Greeenfield, Fairfield co, CT, 24 Jan 17__ (Page torn). Although the date of Seth's birth is incomplete , it obviously did not take place in 1771, as May surmises. The Foster-Livingston Collection of Putnam co Records quotes the tombstone inscription in Milltown Cemetery as follows: "The graves of Seth and Rheuhamah, he died May 1, 1819, 48 y, and she died Dec 9, 1813, 31y." This is the apparent source of May's 1771 birthdate. However, the Bible fragment referred to above is at odds with the date on the tombstone and gives Seth's death date as May 1, 1817. This accords with the date on which his will was entered into porbate-- 16 May 1817. If Seth was indeed 48 years old when he died, he would have to have been born in 1769 and not 1771. This leaves Seth and Sarah's "third" child Eleazar H. with a birthdate of 1771, which seems entirely reasonable. Sarah Sears, their "fourth" child, has no birthdate assigned, and their last child, Thankful, about whom a considerable amount of accurate informationis given, was born on 30 Jun 1775. In regard to the birthdate of Sarah, the International Genealogical Index, published by the LDS Church, gives a birthdate of 24 Mar 1767, for Sarah Sears but does not assign her any parents. A marriage to Thomas Randall in November, 1787, is also listed for Sarah Sears, but again no aprents are listed. However, it seem slikely that this is Seth's daughter. If the family births are arranged according to the inforamtiuon given above, we arrive at a much more reasonable birth order and spacing than theone given by May.

!DSB-I believe the Nathan Sears, whose birth is recorded in Alburgh Town Records (but not born in Alburgh) is this Nathan. Wesleyan Meth. Church records of Shefford, Quebec, contain a record of his death "On 15th day of Nov 1838 died Nathan Sears, farmer of the Twsp of Shefford in the Co. of Shefford and Dist.of Montreal, being in the 70th year of his age__" He applied for land in Quebec along with James and hezekiah, in Arlington, VT, in 1787. Nathan did receive Caldwell Manor land and moved to Quebec about 1789. He applied for Sutton land in 1795, was granted it-sold the last of Sutton land in 1806, and mopved to Alburgh 1806 or earlier. Had children James and Eliza (prob many more). Was enum in Alburgh census in 1810. Must have moved to Shefford bewteen 1810 and 1820.

Nathan Sears may have m. about 1770, to a ____ Sherman, but the tradition is vague, and not supported by records. Family tradition says, Nathan Sears was Captain of a company at the battle of Bunker Hill. He was an Ensign in Capt Edward Hammond's Co., which marched 20 Apr 1775, on alarm at Lexington; 7 days' service; 80 miles' travel, 16s 8d. 2d Lt Co Hon, Mass Regt May-Dec 1775. 2d Lt 23rd Cont Inf 1 Jan - 31 Dec 1776. !BIOGRAPHY: Courtesy of the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, T B Smith Collection of Queens County Families, Sears Family (MG 1, Vol 853), #S7, dtd 8 Jun 1989; 1767-1789; ; ; Public Archives of Nova Scotia; Notes. -2456 SEARS, NATHAN is shown as a proprietor of the Township of Lpool on the confirmation grant of Nov 20,1764. Perkins, Aug 30, 1767: At evening with the schr. Dolphin, Capt. Nathan Sears, arrives from the Island of St John (Now PEI) with 300 qtls. of fish. In 1787 the names of persons who had left the town and county were published, and their lands forfeited. Many of these sympathized with the American side in the Revolution, and for that reason returned to the United States. Others returned before the war was contemplated. Among the names is Nathan Sears. Long, Page 369, says Alden and Nathan Sears went back to Cape Cod. [Note from Lois Yorke, Manuscripts Division- " 'Perkins' indicates that the source of Smith's information is Simeon Perkins, an early and important Queens County diarist. His daily journals have been published: The Diary of Simeon Perkins, ed. H A Innis, D C Harvey and C B Fergusson (Toronto: Champlain Society, 1948-58, 5 vols). 'Long' refers to Robert James Long, a Queens County historian, his Annals of Liverpool and Queens County 1760-1867 (West Medford, MA, 1926) was privately circulated in an unpublished format."]
