S.P. May p.351 Alden Sears was a prominent merchant in Northern Vermont, widely
known in political circles, and a member of the State Legislature three terms.
He went to California in 1850, and made an honorable record in connection with
the southern mines.

S.P. May p.490 George Sears emigrated with his father to CA in 1850, and was a
clerk in Columbia co., till 1857, when he entered college at Oakland for 4
years' term.
In 1861, he enlisted in 4th Regt CA Inf'y, and in 1863, in 8th Regt CA Inf'y;
served to the close of the war, and mustered out at Fort Point, with rank of
1st Lt.; was on duty at Fort Point, and on provost duty at San Francisco
throughout the war.
He was engaged in mercantile business in Contra Costa co., CA, under firm
name of Penniman & Sears, several years, when he removed to Santa Cruz and
erected a saw-mill, which he sold out, and engaged in cattle business. Later
he removed to Portland, OR; went into the grocery business, and kept the
"Dexter Livery-Stable."
He was elected Assessor in 1878, leading his ticket by several hundred votes;
and in 1882, Sheriff of Multnomah co. by an unprecedented majority, discharging
the duties of that office with his characteristic energy and ability, meeting
the approbation of all good citizens.
At the time of the last Indian war in Eastern Oregon, Mr Sears enlisted a
company of 100 men, and was chosen captain.
Having many personal friends, he is a strong man in his party, is a good
political manager, and an honorable politician.
He is noted for his liberality, and is the personification of good humor and
geniality.

3096. Leonard Sears Hon (Silas , Nathaniel , Paul , Paul , Paul , Richard ) was born 12 May 1802 in , Windsor Co, VT. He died 20 Feb 1859 in Onawa, IA and was buried in , 1137.

S.P. May p.352 Leonard Sears removed to western Iowa, 1 May 1854, arriving
Council Bluffs, 10 Jun, and engaged in hotel-keeping; kept the "Pacific House" till 1856, when he removed to a farm in Onawa, Monoma county.
He built the first dwelling-house having a floor, and board roof, rung the
first dinner bell, was the first county judge, justice, and coroner, built the first barn, and started the first public school in the county.
During his life he took a deep interest in public business, and every
enterprise that promised to result in general good, found in him a warm advocate and liberal supporter.
