NFA p 32, Their gravestones were ornately carved by two different people, with tree and urn on top and tall urns down each side.
Jane's stone states:"In memory of Jane Nickerson wife of Israel Nickerson who died Jan 28, 1838 in the 27th year of her age."
Asleep in Jesus far from thee
Thy kindred and thy grave may be
But thine is still a blessed sleep
From which none ever wakes to weep."

Jane married Israel Jr Nickerson, son of Israel Nickerson and Mehitable Gage, on 21 Jan 1832 in Yarmouth, Pub, MA. Israel was born 26 Feb 1804 in Dennis, MA. He died 13 Apr 1841 in lost at sea and was buried in S Dennis Congregational Church.

"Erected to the memory of Israel Nickerson, Jr who was born Feb 26, 1804, Supposed to have been lost at sea Apr 12, 1841, aged 37 years."

The Yarmouth Register of 10 June 1841 notes that "The Schooner Torch of Dennis, Israel Nickerson, master, sailed from Halifax in ballast about Apr 3 for a port in Maine to load lathes for Boston-has not since been heard from."

Evidently the children were put out to board with other families. The daughter Ruth was living with John Freeman and his wife Ruth in Brewster in 1850. The daughter Jane was not found in any of the census records, but perhaps she lived with the Freeman's also, as she later married their son John.

SPM p.445-6(No 1812) Capt Sears was born in E Dennis. In early life he moved to Dudley, MA (hand-note, was CT), but soon returned and bought the ancient
residence of his grand-father in W Brewster, where he died. He formerly
commanded a vessel in the Labrador fisheries, but most of his days were spent
in mechanical pursuits. He was an estimable citizen and bore a good, honest
reputation. CONFLICT: b. 7 Dec 1789 d. Jan 3, 1875 87 yrs, 27 days(?) which would make it 3 Jan 1876? if b. in 1788]
