!S.P. May handnotes Stephen Sears was early at sea, and was a thorough
seafaring man. He was engaged in the fishing and coasting business during the
War of 1812, was captured, shipwrecked, and encountered many reverses. During
the War of 1812, he went to the Mediterranean with a cargo of fish. The
Spaniards seized his vessel and cargo, but sent him to America, landing him
near Wilmington, NC, to return home on foot.
Capt STephen Sears, Schr Ranger, David Kelly, owner, was allowed the bounty
on 9 jars & 24 gallons White Spermaciti Oil brought into Boston, 31 Mar 1787
