S.P. May p.314 November, 1776, Holmes Sears was allowed for rations L5.10, and
for travel L2.4; he was in Lt Judah Wood's Co. in Lt-Col Thos. Lothrop's Regt,
and marched from Halifax to Bristol on alarm of 9 Dec 1776; was 11 days in camp
and allowed for 80 miles and 4 days' travel. He probably served in regular army
also, as his widow drew a pension in 1840; she was then aged 77, and living with
her son William.
His will, dated 2 Sep 1834, was allowed 16 Jan 1837, and mentions wife Mercy,
sons Ward and William, dau. Lucinda Johnson, and grand-sons, William Holmes

S.P. May p.315 Rufus Sears was born in the east precinct of Yarmouth, now
Dennis, MA, in 1770, and was but a few weeks old when his father died.
He lived with his mother until eleven years old, (who meanwhile had married
Gorham Baker,) and then removed with his sister, Desire, wife of Dea. Joseph
Bangs, to Hawley, then an almost unbroken wilderness, with a few scattering log-
houses, and lived with her until 21.
He then made a visit to his mother on Cape Cod, carrying his clothes and
provisions in a pack, and traveling all the distance on foot; spent the winter
with her, and in March, not wishing to go to sea, as the other young men were
then doing, he shouldered his pack and trudged back to Hawley again.
When he left the Cape the farmers were planting; arriving at Hawley, he found
the land still covered with the last winter's snow.
He then purchased and cleared a tract of land, put up a small house, and about
1793 married Priscilla Sears.
He professe to be a follower of the meek and lowly Jesus before he was 21,
endeavored to train up his children in the right way, and was a Deacon in the
Congregational Church for many years.
Rufus married (1) Priscilla Sears, daughter of Daniel Sears and Priscilla Sears, on 1793 in Ashfield, MA. Priscilla was born 27 Feb 1775 in Yarmouth and was christened 10 Nov 1776. She died Nov 1802 in Hawley, MA.
