ELKANAH SEARS
died
Jan 20 1876
Aged 75yrs 11 mo
An affectionate husband
And a kind FatherYarmouth Register, 29 Jan 1876, East Dennis, Mr Editor: It is so seldom that a marriage and a death occurs in a small village like ours on one and the same day, that the mere mention of it may not seem out of place. Such was the case here Thursday, the 20th inst., the cries of the widow and orphans, and the revelry of the wedding party commingling on the passing breeze. Elkanah Sears, the good old man who passed into the better life, was one of the few remaining men of a generation who are proud to carry the simplicity and probity of and benevolence of their fathers to the world beyond the grave with them, after a life long endeavor to transmit such rare virtues to a progressive posterity. His industry forced from his native soil an ample supply of the substantials of life, the luxuries, to which he never aspired, created neither avarice nor discontent in his equal mind, and it can be truly said of him that "he never gave mortal cause to weep until he died." [at the end of the East Dennis correspondent's column he jibes the Sandy Neck correspondent, who quickly replies in the next edition of the Register]"Is your 'Sandy Neck' correspondent in want of ink and paper? We are not overburdened with the wherewithal yet we would rather supply him than endure his perpetual silence.
