SP May pp 478 Mr Sears was appointed cadet West Point Military Academy, Jul 1, 1842; graduated July 1, 1846; Brevet 2d Lt., served in the garrison Fort Columbus, Governor's Island, NY; was in the war with Mexico, 1846-47, being engaged in the siege of Vera Cruz, Mar 9-29, 1847 (made 2d Lt.Art'y, Mar 3,1847); defense of Convoy at Pass Ovejas, Aug 10; National Bridge, Aug 14; Cerro Gordo, Aug 16; and Los Animas, Aug 19; also combat of Humantla, Oct 9,1847;(he was Division Quartermaster), and at the action of Allixco, Oct 12; brevetted 1st Lt., Aug 15, 1847, for gallant and meritorious conduct in several affairs with guerillas at Pass Ovejas, National Bridge and Cerro Gordo; on special duty in the Adjutant General's office, Washington, DC from Dec 8,1847 to Mar 8,1848; and in command garrison at Fort Macon,NC 1848 (1st Lt., 2d Art'y, Oct 1847) resigned Jun 30, 1849 (Army Reg) He was twice sent home by Gen Scott as bearer of dispatches, bringing in charge as prisoner of wr, Gen Iturbide, son of the former emporer of Mexico .

which Prince Albert was President, and received from the society a medal for
the "Invention of the Nautilus Diving Bell"
He married in 1846, Harriet Louiza Clitz, daughter of Capt. John Clitz, USA, (who died in command at Ft Mackinaw in 1836) and sister of Adm John Clitz, USN and General Henry B Clitz, USA.
