Dennis, Cape Cod, p 386, In 1859, having been assured by his previous journeys of the safety and comfort of his ship, Capt Milton P Hedge decided to take his wife and son along on his next trip aboard the ship Webfoot. Young master John Milton Hedge (1857-1915) was barely two years old when the voyage began. Can you imagine the preparations a mother would have to make in order to be ready for a trip of at least three and maybe as many as five months at sea, with a child of but two years?...But Mrs Hedge had lost the first baby and perhaps the joy of sharing her husband's company outweighed the difficulties the voyage presented. The Webfoot was to leave from New York in the spring of 1859 with needed supplies for the prospectors in the gold fields of California-wheelbarrows, picks, shovels and oter hardware. Clarissa married Josiah Nickerson Capt, son of Shubael Nickerson and Sarah Nickerson, on 20 Jan 1853. Josiah was born 8 Sep 1825 in S Dennis, MA. He died 26 Apr 1888 in Portland, ME.

NFA p 618 Josiah lived in Dennis, located at what is now 16 Elm St, after becoming the home of William Ernest Crowell.[Isn't that Josh Crowell's father?] He moved to Portland, ME, took all his furniture by boat, and never returned to Cape Cod.
Josiah Nickerson went to sea at the age of eight years, and continued to follow the sea until the close of the civil war. He was a master mariner and sailed between New England and West India ports until the outbreak of the wat and after that time his business was principally bringing cotton from the Confederate states. He was shot at a southern port three times, but the fact that he was a Mason becoming known prevented further trouble. After 1855 he settled in Portland at 106 India street, and carried on the business of ship broker and commission merchant until about the time of his death.
The Portland City Directory says he was a Ship and Insurance Broker at 203 Commercial Street, Portland, ME.
