Years of High Purpose, Univ Press of Am, Wash DC, 1980; by Mason Sears; From Trusteeship to Nationhood; with a preface by Henry Cabot Lodge and an introduction by Julius Nyerere; The record which follows is a story of frustration, my personal frustration, in failing to persuade the US State Department not to reverse traditional US Policy toward self-determination, meaning national freedom, for all peoples - Africans in particular. For Sears the year 1960 was a great climax. For years he had travelled throughout Africa, visiting these one-time colonies. It was his duty (as Ambassador -Representative of the US in the Trusteeship Council, UN) to make up his mind whether each one was ready for self-government.
